The most underrated coach
Most of the time, there is a coach who never shows up in the pictures.
A nutritionist who never gets credit for the role played.
A psychologist nobody dedicates goals to with special celebrations.
An equipment manager nobody throws in the air after winning a trophy, even though has always been paying attention to every little detail.
And has been always, always there.
And I could keep going.
Driver.
Doctor.
Accountant.
Agent.
Cheerleader.
And, many times, the person who reads these emails the most to help her child.
Of course, I’m talking about moms.
The safety net many players need so they can enjoy playing without worrying about everything else.
I know because I’ve seen it.
I know because I’ve lived it.
And I also know most players never thank them for all of that.
Not because they don’t value it.
But because they take it for granted.
As if that’s just how it’s supposed to be.
But it isn’t.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
And if there is one quote I haven’t been able to get out of my head since I first read it, it’s this:
The sad thing is not having no one to celebrate Valentine’s Day with.
The sad thing is having no one to call on Mother’s Day.
So, since unfortunately players usually listen more to the visible Coach, tell them this from me:
Coach AL says that today, at the very least, they should thank you.
For being there.
For staying there.
For acting as coach, nutritionist, psychologist, driver, agent, cheerleader, and safety net.
Because no player walks this road alone.
And many players have that entire team packed into one person.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the soccer moms who make the whole journey possible.
¡Vamos!
— Coach AL
